Three Baylor graphic design students from the Department of Art and Art History in the College of Arts & Sciences brought back top awards in the student category at the Dallas chapter of the American Advertising Awards (ADDYs) on February 26.
Lily Asher, a junior studio art major from Greenwood Village, Colorado, received the Best of Show Award and the Gold Award for her original designs for The Cost of Bleeding Campaign.
CJ Kaltwasser, a senior studio art major from Austin, Texas, received a Silver Award for his Outdoor Element Logo, and received Honorable Mention Awards for both his Buckridge Casino Logo and his Royal Maple Matches Logo.
Ella Sparks, a sophomore studio art major from Branson, Missouri, received a Silver Award for her Social Media Campaign (MAMA).
All three Baylor winners are design students of Genaro Solis Rivero, assistant professor of art and art history, who said that their victories in the Dallas competition represent a tremendous achievement in one of the nation’s most competitive and creative markets.
“This milestone is an inspiring testament to our students’ skills and relentless drive — a common characteristic in Baylor students,” he said. “This time, their work exceeded all expectations, shining a spotlight on the extraordinary talent emerging from our program and amplifying our presence in the competitive Dallas market.”
Solis Rivero said that design competitions such as the ADDYs are a common and respected practice in the advertising and graphic design industry.
“More importantly, they validate students’ efforts, build confidence, foster a sense of pride and community and build a great rapport,” he said. “In six years of teaching graphic design in higher education and 25 years of practice, I can attest that design competitions are a reality check that changes students’ lives forever in a positive, magical way.”
