Dr. Amanda Hering to Serve As New Chair of the Department of Statistical Science in Arts & Sciences
Dr. Amanda S. Hering
James R. Brockmole, Ph.D., dean of the Baylor University College of Arts & Sciences, has appointed Amanda S. Hering, Ph.D., to a three-year term as the new chair of the Department of Statistical Science, effective September 14. She succeeds James Stamey, Ph.D., who stepped down as chair to become associate dean for research and strategic initiatives in the College on August 15.
Dr. Hering, a professor of statistical science at Baylor, received a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics from Baylor University in 1999. She went on to earn a Master of Science in Statistics from Montana State University in 2002 and a Ph.D. in Statistics from Texas A&M University in 2009. She spent seven years as an assistant professor at the Colorado School of Mines before joining the Baylor faculty in 2016.

Hering's research focuses on applied problems in engineering and the environment using multivariate, time series, and spatial statistical methods. Her current scholarly interests are in modeling big, multivariate, spatial datasets; developing methods for categorical spatial data; and detecting outliers and faults for process and data control.
In 2019, Hering received an invitation to join Department of Energy’s $100 million National Alliance for Water Innovation. Over the last seven years, she has guided Baylor University’s team efforts within the Alliance, with a goal to develop autonomous processes for water control systems and contribute to a more sustainable circular water economy.
Hering received the 2017 Early Investigator Award from the American Statistical Association’s Section on Statistics and the Environment, and in 2019 she was awarded the Abdel El-Shaarawi Early Investigator’s Award from The International Environmetrics Society (TIES), being cited for “significant and outstanding contributions to the environmental statistical and quantitative research as proved by the number and quality of publications in the statistical literature." In 2024, the Departmentr of Statistics at Texas A&M University selected her for the H.O. Hartley Award, given annually to alumni for distinguished service and scholarly contributions to the discipline of statistics.
In addition to serving as an associate editor for Technometrics, Environmetrics, Stat, and the Journal of Environmental Statistics, Hering has served in various elected and appointed roles for the American Statistical Association.
